أخرج أحمد والنسائي وغيرهما عن أمير المؤمنين عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه أنه قال:" إياكم والمغالاة فى مهور النساء، فإنها لو كانت تقوى عند الله أو مكرمة عند الناس لكان رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- أولاكم بها.
ما نكح رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- شيئا من نسائه ولا أنكح واحدة من بناته بأكثر من اثنى عشرة أوقية.
وهى أربعمائة درهم وثمانون درهما.
وإن أحدهم ليغالى بمهر امرأته حتى يبقى عداوة فى نفسه فيقول : لقد كلفت لك علق القربة.
