فقال للسائل: ثكلتك أمك، وهل رأيت فقيهاً بعينك : إنما الفقيه الزاهد في الدنيا، الراغب في الآخرة، البصير بدينه، المداوم على طاعة ربه، الورع الكافُّ نفسه عن أعراض المسلمين، العفيف عن أموالهم، الناصح لجماعتهم، المجتهد في العبادة، المقيم على سنة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، الذي لا ينبذ من فوقه، ولا يسخر ممن دونه، ولا يأخذ على علم عَلَّمه الله له حطاماً من الدنيا.
