أخرج ابن سعد في "طبقاته" من خبر سليمان بن يسار قال:"خطب عمر بن الخطاب الناس في زمن الرمادة، فقال:
أيها الناس اتقوا الله في أنفسكم، وفيما غاب عن الناس من أمركم، فقد ابتليت بكم وابتليتم بي، فما أدري السخطى عليَّ دونكم، أو عليكم دوني، أوقد عمتني وعمتكم، فهلموا فندع الله يصلح قلوبنا، وأن يرحمنا، وأن يرفع عنا المحل،
قال: فرئي عمر يومئذ رافعاً يديه يدعو الله، ودعا الناس، وبكى وبكى الناس ملياً، ثم نزل".
فأخشى أن يكون سبب تأخر النصر هو الذنوب التي يقع فيها أبناء هذه الأمة، فأسأل الله أن يصلح قلوبنا، وأن يرحمنا، وأن ينصرنا على أعدائنا.
