قال الشافعي : "من تعلم القرآن عظمت قيمته، و من تكلم في الفقه نما قدره، و من كتب الحديث قويت حجته، و من نظر في اللغة رق طبعه، و من نظر في الحساب جزُل رأيه، ومن لم يَصُن نفسه لم ينفعه علمه" ( انظر طبقات الشافعية)
وقال أيضاً:" طلب العلم أفضل من صلاة النافلة " (آداب الشافعي).
وعن أبي العالية قال :"كنت آتي ابن عباس، و هو على سريره، و حوله قريش فيأخذ بيدي، فيجلسني معه على السرير، فتغامزني قريش، ففطن لهم ابن عباس، فقال : "كذلك هذا العلم، يزيد الشريف شرفاً، و يجلس المملوك على الأسرّة" ( انظر الفقيه والمتفقه).
وقال علي بن أبي طالب : " كفى بالعلم شرفاً أن يدعيه من لا يحسنه، و يفرح به إذا نُسب إليه، وكفى بالجهل ذمّاً أن يتبرأ منه من هو فيه ".
و قال أبو الأسود الدؤلي : " ليس شيء أعز من العلم، الملوك حكام على الناس، والعلماء حكام على الملوك ".
و قال وهب:"يتشعب من العلم الشرف و إن كان صاحبه دنيّا، و العز و إن كان مهينا، والقرب و إن كان قصيّا، و الغنى و إن كان فقيرا، و المهابة و إن كان وضيعا"
